Hiking in the Rio Grande del Norte | Sat Sep 27 | Slide Show | Delafield DuBois | Hiking in the Rio Grande del Norte - A half-century Story of Exploration The Rio Grande is the big feature of the Taos Plateau. There are also many Volcanoes and an adjacent wilderness area with a inadequately- appreciated Rio San Antonio. There 's paved road access to many hiking and camping opportunities. There are also classic NM dirt roads, old trails, new trails, and off-trail opportunities for exploration and hiking. Delafield DuBois is an Archeologist by training, and an explorer both personally and professionally. His career has exclusively focused on the northern part of our state, ranging from grant-funded palaeoclimatological study, to trail design and construction. With 30 years of search and rescue experience, Del will offer a diverse menu of opportunities that will be tempered by the caution necessary for exploration of an area that has been enjoyed by millennia of explorers. The following day (Sunday September 28) there will be a hike to Cerro de la Olla (Pot Mountain) on the west side of the Monument. It 's a 2 1/2 hour drive from Santa Fe, 5 mile round trip to the summit, with 1,340 feet of elevation gain. Given the last hour of access is dirt road, if it is too muddy, the hike will occur on the following Saturday October 4. Alan Shapiro will be joined by Del and John Buchser to lead that expedition. Given the long driving time, it will be a long day. |
Travel Bug Book Discussion 5:30 pm | Tue Sep 30 | Book Group | Aimee Gwynne Franklyn | Yael van der Wouden 's "The Safekeep " Set in the Netherlands after the war, The Safekeep is a compelling tale of obsession and secrets, exploring the stories that are kept from us as children, and the stories that we tell to ourselves about our own hidden desires. Fifteen years from the end of the Second World War and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the conflict is well and truly over. Isabel lives alone in her late mother 's country home, and her life is led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis delivers his graceless new girlfriend, Eva, at Isabel 's doorstep as a guest, there to stay for the season. Eva is Isabel 's antithesis: she sleeps late, wakes late, walks loudly through the house and touches things she shouldn 't. In response, Isabel develops a fury-fuelled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house her suspicions spiral out of control. In the sweltering heat of summer, Isabel 's desperate desire for order transforms into infatuation – leading to a discovery that unravels all she has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva – nor the house – are what they seem. Everyone welcome |

Italian Dolomites | Sat Nov 22 | Slide Show | Ken Collins | "The Dolomites are a portion of the European Alps located in far northern Italy, close to the Austrian border. In fact, until the end of World War I, much of the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but was ceded to Italy as a "reward " for coming in on the side of the Allies. Much of the region is stilll more Germanic than Italian, with German the first language and customs and cuisine remaining predominantly Austrian. Sprinkled with beautiful small towns, its claim to fame is the stunning alpine scenery and the abundance of hiking trails and "rifugios " - luxurious trailside restaurants offering lodgings for those walking long distances. Along with the knock-out setting, there is a wealth of brilliantly-colored wildflowers in spring and summer. A short distance from the Dolomites is the Italian lake district, and of the numerous famous lakes, Lake Garda is remarkable for its jewel-like placement surrounded by steep cliffs and mountain sides spilling down to the water. While small cities along the lake shore are popular with holiday makers, the area also offers some dramatic walks. This program will highlight some of the beauty of this area, based on a trip my husband and I made there in June 2024, before the peak and crowded July - August period. " - Ken Collins |
